Two-thirds of the more than two million Americans who annually enter drug and alcohol rehabilitation relapse. Braun-Harvey will describe how sex negative counselor attitudes and misconceptions contribute to this treatment failure. Sex Positive Recovery shows how addiction treatment outcomes improve when counselors link recovery with principles of sexual heath. After four years of design and evidence-based study, this groundbreaking relapse prevention approach is ready to put into practice. This workshop will provide a step-by-step process of change for treatment providers to integrate principles of sexual health resulting in better client retention. Sex Positive Recovery teaches counselors to connect client sexual health, sexual history, sexual attitudes and values with difficult to treat sex/drug-linked behaviors. These “Core Four: Keystones for Sexual Health” show the way to a dozen relapse prevention principles Braun-Harvey calls” The Twelve Belief Statements”. Sex Positive Recovery outlines specific sexual health skill sets for each of these twelve belief statements. Informative and specific case studies are included throughout the training giving participants direction on how to apply positive sexual health treatment methods at every stage of the recovery process.
